Marijuana, enjoy the slow motion

Marijuana, enjoy the slow motion

Choose between having a decent retirement in your seventies or destroying the world.

I had an argument with my mother, like the ones I usually have with her to help her preserve her mental health, in which she told me she wanted to go to the Congregación Mariana to find some arts-and-crafts course she could sign up for. I told her: Mother, respect our god, time, and stop looking for death; going after those courses is going in search of pastimes, and as the name itself suggests, it means spending your own time, the only thing we have in our lives, on something meaningless. It is as illogical as sticking your dick into a meat grinder. Time is far too invaluable to go around looking for ways to destroy it.

But what would the opposite be? What would allow us to expand time? Well, from my experience and under the concept of relativity, in which we cannot even prove our own existence, I want to say that the answer lies in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and philosophy.

We cannot manufacture more hours or add minutes to the day, but perhaps we can make a minute feel longer. If our existence depends on the way we perceive what happens while we are alive, altering our perception of time would, in a way, expand it. Not living longer, but feeling that we live more within the same amount of time.

Marijuana According to Wil

It is no secret that I tried marijuana in June 2021, at the age of 37, fortunately late in life and right when I had become quite contemplative and less impressionable. We already know that, depending on its frutifantastic composition (%THC vs. %CBD), it can produce different effects. With most of the puffs of weed I have tried, the feeling it gives me—or rather, the overwhelming need—is to drop a smoke bomb and escape to my little bed to sleep like a happy baby. But there have been cases in which sensations are noticeably enhanced and time seems to stretch.

Our body behaves like a conglomerate of control systems correlated with one another. A control system is basically the action of a process that transforms an element entering the system under the adjustment of certain independent variables. To give you an example of a basic control system: a boiled egg. You put a raw egg into a pot of water and activate the system using two variables: the amount of flame and the cooking time. When the time is up, you remove the egg, and it is no longer raw but cooked; the egg underwent a transformation.

There are thousands of control systems in the body, some autonomous and others voluntary. In many respects, they are activated by chemical codes originating in the hypothalamus, the place where I believe our true self resides—not because I can prove it, but because I find it fascinating that such a small part of the brain can have so much influence over fundamental functions of our existence. These codes, in turn, trigger other glands in a cascade, causing them to secrete other chemicals or hormones. They tell the body what to do automatically, but there are other aspects that, through the use of our senses, allow us to rationally understand the experience of life. Touch, sight, smell, taste, intuition, and all those things Shaka of Virgo took away from Phoenix.

We do not know exactly how our conscious experience reconstructs everything our eyes capture, just to name one example. But the development of cinema gives us an interesting analogy. A movie presents us with a succession of images, and our mind ultimately perceives them as continuous movement. Today, we can watch video at 24, 60, or 120 fps and perceive differences in the fluidity of movement.

The brain is obviously not a camera, and we do not have a tiny fps counter installed behind our eyes, but let me abuse the analogy a little.

Those of us who have experienced marijuana have the sensation that when we use it, somehow our cognitive processes slow down, but it is very strange that this sensation comes together with the perception that time itself is stretching. Anyway, time is what it is for everyone, but those who are sober, so to speak, see that the person under the effects of marijuana becomes so relaxed that they appear slow. Meanwhile, from the inside, the person under the effects of marijuana feels that time passes very slowly, as though they and everyone around them were experiencing an almost complete freezing of time. You feel hypersensitive.

For now, without knowing the processing speed of signals in the brain, and using only the sense of sight as an example to try to explain the effect of marijuana that makes you sensitive, I am going to take the liberty of saying that the brain processes images at 511 fps*.

Why 511? Because it comes straight out of my dear fucking balls.

It is then as if, under the effects of marijuana, the brain went from those imaginary 511 fps to 24 fps. Not because this literally happens, but because it helps me explain the sensation: the mind seems to have much more time to interpret each frame, to savor each image. It is like walking into an art exhibition and standing in front of a painting long enough to extract the details that would allow you to describe it better.

Your brain is running slowly; therefore, it is less reactive and more contemplative, but your mind seems to keep running at normal speed. And that is where things get interesting. If the mind maintains its internal conversation while information from the outside seems to arrive more slowly, then it seems to have more time to linger over everything. So much so that you could say it gets tired of absorbing details from so many frozen signals, almost like photographs, and of extracting information through all the senses; because what happens with sight also happens with all the others.

That is why sex on marijuana is fucking crazy. Not because touch literally becomes slower, but because the perception of sensations seems to stretch out, allowing you to enjoy them more because you become more aware of them. It is as if there were enough time to zoom in on every square centimeter of skin, especially those extra-sensitive areas.

The senses close the loop of a control system, which seems to slow down under the consumption of substances such as marijuana. Despite this, conversations become infinite. If you are having a good conversation, you will think hours have passed when, in reality, only a few minutes have gone by, and this is what these effects are really useful for: talking, either with yourself or with someone else, preferably the latter.

Marijuana is not useful for analyzing a problem or making a good decision; it works better for opening some closed doors of thought and perhaps finding a new perspective from a point of view different from the usual ones, one that allows us to better appreciate our surroundings and, if one is too deeply rooted in sobriety, expand consciousness a little further.

I have to confess that, together with a friend, I have made a few recordings of my stoner sessions to see what the hell can be salvaged from my observations in the midst of the brain's slowness. There have been some good jokes and plenty of contemplation about the sensations of the body under the effects of marijuana. Among all of them, there is one horrible recording filled with suffering, the result of drinking beer before lighting up. We saw the devil's asshole with that combination of substances, and we learned our lesson. On some future occasion, I will write about my first awesome trip and my first bad trip under the effects of marijuana. Both stories are very good.

As a recommendation, in case you are curious about trying it, it is best to have enough water, something warm to wear, money for a hamburger, not to be under the effects of alcohol and, above all, to be somewhere safe and in good company, with someone you genuinely trust. My experience, obviously, does not mean that everyone will experience it the same way.

It is chemistry, it is physics, it is mathematics, it is philosophy.

Marijuana is not worth it if you are not already a contemplative person, if it will not produce a good conversation, if it has nothing relevant to teach us about ourselves, or if it will not provide some new experience. Without these things, marijuana is merely a pastime and a desire to finish off your own life faster.

And perhaps this is where I have to admit that my mother might have a point. If, in that arts-and-crafts class, she manages to spend two hours focused on something she enjoys, talk to someone, learn something new, and return home feeling that those two hours were truly hers, then perhaps she is not killing time.

Perhaps pastimes were never the problem.

Perhaps killing time simply means letting it pass without ever really being there.

A hug to everyone, and try it.

*511 fps is a completely made-up number used to build the analogy. Please, do not cite me in a thesis.

220818 - Marijuana enjoy the slow motion

This is the original picture of that post on Facebook. Maybe that day I was a little bit high at the pub I love the most back in home town.

IF YOU LIKED IT

If you enjoyed Wilson’s latest piece—a strange journey through marijuana, time, engineering, sex, consciousness, and 511 completely fabricated frames per second—here are three places worth visiting if you want to explore some of the real ideas hiding underneath all that nonsense.

1. “The Effect of Cannabis on Perception of Time: A Critical Review” — Zerrin Atakan et al.

This is probably the scientific paper most closely connected to the central idea of Wilson’s piece. The authors reviewed previous research on cannabis and time perception and found that distortion of time is indeed one of the effects commonly reported by cannabis users. Interestingly, about 70% of the time-estimation studies they reviewed reported an overestimation of elapsed time, although the authors emphasize that the evidence remains inconclusive.

2. “Closed-loop vs. Open-loop Systems” — MIT OpenCourseWare

If Wilson lost you when he suddenly started talking like an engineer about control systems and feedback loops, this short resource from MIT is the one to read. MIT's Feedback Systems course introduces the distinction between open- and closed-loop systems and the fundamental role of feedback: measuring what a system is actually doing and using that information to influence what happens next.

3. “Acute Effects of THC on Time Perception in Frequent and Infrequent Cannabis Users” — R. Andrew Sewell et al.

This one gets particularly interesting when compared with Wilson’s slow-motion theory. In controlled experiments, researchers found that THC caused participants—particularly infrequent users—to overestimate elapsed time and produce shorter time intervals. The authors described the results in terms of an increase in subjective “internal clock” speed. They also found that the effect was blunted in frequent cannabis users.

As for why the brain supposedly runs at exactly 511 fps, science unfortunately has no answer. Wilson already provided one.
